The old Tokaido, today
We begin with what is already here.
The old Tokaido is not only a historic route between Tokyo and Kyoto. In Kanbara, Yui, Okitsu and Ejiri, it is still a lived landscape: houses, shops, workshops, kitchens and everyday relationships.
As traditional homes disappear, a street can lose more than architecture. It can lose one of the places where people naturally meet.
A place to stay close
Preservation is not the first thing a guest should feel.
A traveller should first feel welcome: to sleep well, meet someone, learn a practice and see the region through the lives already rooted here. The care of the house follows through that experience. Staying gives the building a use, creates work around it and makes another chapter possible.

Still on the way
This work is unfinished by nature.
KAIDO is entrusted with old homes and cares for them as whole-house stays. We continue to learn from owners, neighbours, makers and guests as each place finds its role.
The road has never been one finished story. It stays alive through the people who keep moving along it.

Yusuke Makita
Born in 1990. Graduated from Shimizu-Higashi High School (soccer team) and Kyoto University, Department of Architecture. After working at Burckhardt+Partner SA, an architecture firm in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Heisei Construction Co., Ltd., he went independent. In 2019, he personally acquired and restored a 120-year-old machiya townhouse in Kanbara, opening Soku-an as a ryokan-style cultural facility. Overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2024 he co-launched SHIMIZUCROSS, a shared office serving as a sports business hub, in collaboration with Takeya Ryokan. In 2025, he restored a townhouse near Okitsu Station, launching Seisei-an. Board member of Shimizu-Ekimae Ginza Shopping District. Board member of the Shizuoka Minka (Traditional House) Revitalization Association. Renovation community mentor for Shizuoka Prefecture.
