Train with True Japanese Masters—in Quiet Post Towns

In Japan, there is a unique concept called
“Dō” (the Way)—a path for refining skill while
nurturing the spirit.
Martial arts such as Kendo teach discipline and
inner strength through the body,
while artistic traditions like Tea Ceremony (Sadō),
cultivate aesthetic sensibility through everyday practice.

On this journey, you will stay in a traditional
Japanese townhouse and experience the “Ways,”
immersing yourself in the spirit, culture, and
techniquescherished by the Japanese for generations.

This is more than simply observing—you will take part,
move, and feel,
walking the “Japanese Way” with both mind and
body for an unforgettable,
once-in-a-lifetime experience.

武道

“Budō” are Japan’s martial Ways where technique and character are inseparable—training refines courage, respect, and self-control.

Kendō 剣道

Kendō

剣道

This residency isn’t a demo—it’s daily keiko in a real dojo guided by lineage instructors. You’ll build timing, distance, and calm under pressure while learning the etiquette and mindset that shape Japanese sword arts. Small cohorts, clear drills, and tailored feedback help you progress whether you’re new to Kendo or returning to practice.

You will:

  • ・Train core fundamentals—footwork, cutting lines, kiai—in structured sessions
  • ・Practice safely with provided gear and learn proper dojo etiquette
  • ・Join keiko with local practitioners for authentic exchange
  • ・Integrate breathwork and recovery to sustain focus over the week
Aikidō 合気道

Aikidō

合気道

Master the art of harmony and the power of non-resistance. Aikido is not about clashing forces; it is the discipline of blending with and redirecting an opponent's energy. In this residency, you will practice on the tatami to learn Ukemi (the art of falling) and fluid joint locks. Discover how circular movement and a centered mind allow you to neutralize aggression without violence, fostering a spirit of protection rather than destruction.

Judō 柔道

Judō

柔道

Learn to fall so you can rise. Experience the "Gentle Way" at its source. Go back to the roots of Judo, emphasizing maximum efficiency and mutual welfare. This training focuses on the fundamental mechanics of balance, leverage, and the critical skill of Ukemi—falling safely. Through grappling and throwing drills, you will understand how to use an opponent's momentum against them, building both physical resilience and the mental flexibility to adapt to any situation.

Kyudō 弓道

Kyudō

弓道

Draw the bow, clear your mind, and experience "standing Zen."
This program moves beyond simple archery to teach the Hassetsu (Eight Stages of Shooting) in a traditional dojo. You'll learn to coordinate your breath, posture, and focus, understanding that hitting the target is a result of a correct spirit, not just aim. Guided by expert instructors, you will handle a genuine Yumi (bow) and discover the profound silence found in the moment of release.

Karatedō 空手道

Karatedō

空手道

Forge your body and spirit through the discipline of the "Empty Hand."
Step onto the mat for authentic training that goes deeper than basic self-defense. Through the repetition of Kata (forms) and controlled drills, you'll sharpen your reflexes, balance, and striking power. This immersion emphasizes the true "Way" of Karate—cultivating respect, mental resilience, and precise body mechanics. Suitable for beginners seeking discipline or practitioners looking to refine their core techniques.

芸道

The artistic “Dō” focus on grace in everyday acts—pouring tea, placing flowers, writing a single stroke—with mindfulness as the core skill.

Sadō 茶道

Sadō

茶道

Master the art of tranquility and the philosophy of Ichigo Ichie.
Enter the serenity of a tea room to understand that the Way of Tea is about more than just drinking. In this immersive session, you will learn the precise choreography of the host—from the purification of utensils to the whisking of Matcha. Discover the aesthetics of the seasons, the importance of hospitality, and how to find deep mental stillness through the ritual of "one time, one meeting."

Kadō 華道

Kadō

華道

Sculpt with nature and discover the aesthetics of negative space. Ikebana is a meditative dialogue with nature, distinct from Western flower arranging. Rather than simply gathering blooms, you will learn to create structure using lines, asymmetry, and Ma (empty space). Under expert guidance, you will trim and position branches to reveal their inner life, learning that what you leave out is just as important as what you put in.

Kodō 香道

Kodō

香道

"Listen" to the scent and sharpen your five senses in silence. Step into a world of refined aristocracy where fragrance is not smelled, but "listened to." In this rare ceremony, you will handle precious aromatic woods and engage in the traditional art of Mon-koh. By focusing your entire being on subtle differences in scent, you will cultivate a heightened state of sensory awareness and find deep tranquility away from the noise of the modern world.

Shodō 書道

Shodō

書道

Channel your energy onto paper in a practice of mindfulness and ink.
Swap the pen for a traditional brush and experience the immediacy of Japanese calligraphy. This isn't just copying characters; it involves mastering breath control, posture, and the balance between black ink and white space. You will learn to focus your mind into a single point, creating brushstrokes that reflect your inner state. Create a lasting piece of art on Washi paper that captures the essence of the moment.

Noh 能楽

Noh

能楽

Walk the path of Yugen and channel spirits through the mask. Noh is a theater of minimalism and profound beauty. This workshop invites you to the stage to learn the unique sliding walk (Suriashi) and the intense physical control required beneath the elaborate costumes. You will experience the world through the narrow sightlines of a Noh mask, learning how restraining movement can amplify emotion and presence in this centuries-old performing art.

Ukiyo-e 浮世絵

Ukiyo-e

浮世絵

Ukiyo-e is Japan’s Edo-period woodblock print tradition—a team craft of artist (design), carver (block), and printer (color and impression). In this studio residency you don’t just hear the history—you practice the process with working artisans.

You’ll transfer a design to wood, learn knife control for clean lines, mix pigments, register paper with kento marks, and pull your own editions on washi using a hand baren. Small cohorts and step-by-step demos ensure you progress whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to deepen your technique.

You will:

  • ・Learn the full workflow: design transfer → basic carving → inking → multi-color registration → hand printing
  • ・Work with traditional tools and materials (washi, baren, water-based pigments) in a real studio setting
  • ・Understand how roles—artist, carver, printer—combine to create depth, gradations, and texture
  • ・Receive tailored feedback and practice time to refine cut quality, edges, and color consistency

Our favourite part was practising kendo with true Japanese masters. Their passion and care were clear. The large dojo near a shrine felt special. I’d go longer next time—beginners are in great hands.
