A road survives through the people who keep finding a use for the places beside it.
Along the old Tokaido in Shizuoka, traditional homes are disappearing one by one. KAIDO is entrusted with some of these houses and cares for them as places to stay, where a traveller can meet the region through its people, practices and everyday life.
The aim is not to ask a guest to carry the burden of preservation. The first promise is simpler: sleep well, meet someone, and leave with a truer sense of the place. When that encounter also gives an old house a living role, care becomes something shared rather than imposed.
Still on the way
This work is deliberately unfinished. Each house asks for a different answer, shaped with owners, neighbours, makers and guests. Every stay makes room for another encounter and helps a street remain a lived landscape.
